Season Outlook 2017

The Otero Junior College Women’s Soccer team has established a high-level of national recognition in recent years. The 2016 season was another successful year under Head Coach Sierra Doherty-Cardenas before her departure to CSU-P. The lady rattlers made it to the Region IX championship for the fifth consecutive year.

After finishing the year as runners-up, the Lady Rattlers look to return to the championship of the Region IX tournament under a new coaching staff. Serving as the men’s assistant last year, Cruz E. Cortes-Ortiz has taken the position left by Coach Cardenas. Joining Coach Cortes is Kendra Reid, an Aurora native. Both coaches are Otero alumni and know and understand the expectations set by the college in the classroom and the history on the field.

The team will be led by a core group of sophomores, including the team’s three captains: Region IX Freshman of the Year, Chloe Craig (So., Glasgow, Scotland), Tyler Murphy (So., Arvada, CO), and Adriana Smith (So. Alamogordo, NM). The sophomore class is no stranger to playing important games as the majority of them were starters the previous season.

Coach Cortes is extremely excited about the potential of the team. “The transition into this position could not have been a smoother process than it has been. The fact that the sophomores are familiar with me really helped with having them buy into what I want to accomplish and how I want to go forth with things,” said Cortes.

“This place is more than just somewhere to get an education. It is a place where you can grow as a person and learn to value a family oriented atmosphere. Every single person that contributes to making up the staff of Otero Junior College has an investment in the lives of everyone who steps foot on campus. We strive for excellence as students, athletes and people. At the end of the day, we are a stepping stone for these student-athletes, and we want to give society the absolute best of these kids,” Cortes added.
