Volleyball Season Wrap-up
2017 Season Wrap-up
The Otero Lady Rattlers went into the Region IX south tournament with a conference
record as 6-4. The Lady Rattlers traveled to Scottsbluff, Nebraska with competitive
fire in their hearts. Their record placed them third in conference, allowing them
to face Trinidad as their first match up. After a win in three on November 2nd, the
Lady Rattlers were forced to compete against nationally ranked Western Nebraska Community
College; where the winner earns valuable rest time between matches.
This match went five sets. The Lady Rattlers won the second set and the fourth set, which they battled all the way to 28-26 to get the match to go to five sets. With this win, the Lady Rattlers knew they would have a little easier road ahead of them but trying to play catch up in the fifth set was hard to do. They fell short this set losing 15-9, putting them back down into the loser’s bracket. The Lady Rattlers then were matched up against Lamar Community College. Although they were able to get two wins over them earlier in conference play, Lamar was able to use our prior five set match against them. Lamar took this win in a five set match, eliminating OJC from further competition.
However, the Lady Rattlers were able to hold their heads high on account Western Nebraska defended their title and moved onto the national tournament as the top team from Region IX. The Otero volleyball program did receive recognition throughout the conference as well as tournament play. Three Lady Rattlers, freshmen Marine Kinna and Sophomores Melissa Rodriguez and Beatriz Palmieri, were named 1st Team All Region and Marine Kinna was also named All Tournament Team. Otero Head Coach Jordan Wilis, Assistant Coach Morgan Wilkening, and the other Region IX South coaches selected all Region and Tournament players. These players were chosen based on their Region IX play as well as their compiled stats throughout the season.
Sophomore Outside Hitter, Beatriz Palmieri was selected with high recognition for First Team All-Region. The first look during preseason, gave us confidence in her ability to carry the load of a six rotation outside, but when a high ankle sprain took her out in the beginning of preseason, the Otero coaching staff faced some challenges in replacing this specific position. Being healthy enough to come back for the start of conference, Beatriz was able to tally up 212 kills, 299 digs, and averaged 3.5 points per set. This helped Otero Junior College remain in the top ten in the nation for tallied digs.
Sophomore Middle Blocker, Melissa Rodriguez, was also selected for First Team All-Region. Rodriguez played a huge role as an offensive threat this year, earning 216 kills this season. Her defense didn’t go unnoticed; Rodriguez single handedly stopped 21 hits this season and totaled 70 Block Assists. Throughout her two years at Otero Junior College, she was able to earn an average of 2.8 points per set.
Freshmen Outside Hitter, Marine Kinna, was selected for both First Team All-Region and All-Tournament Team. She averaged 2.8 points per set and earned 276 kills on the season. Although her primary role was an Outside Hitter, she was able to keep the ball off the floor in the backrow 466 times throughout the season. With her defense and agility, Kinna helped maintain the 17.6 digs per set for the Lady Rattlers.
2016 Season Wrap Up
On November 3, the Lady Rattler volleyball team started the Region IX South tournament, looking to win a Region Title. Unfortunately, they fell to a tough team from Northeastern Junior College and finished third.
Although the team finished lower than anticipated, four girls received awards that lifted spirits. All Region awards were voted on by coaches, based on the players that had outstanding seasons. All Tournament players were selected by Otero Head Coach Jordan Willis, Assistant Coach Rachel Weiland, and Athletic Director Gary Addington. These players were chosen based on their play only in the Region IX Tournament.
Sophomore Libero Abbey Wehrman was selected for both the All Region and All Tournament teams. Throughout the season she earned 707 digs, and achieved well over her 1000th career dig. Wehrman averaged 4.91 digs per set and helped the team’s hitters by giving them 66 assists. Her efforts also placed her a projected sixth in the nation for total digs.
Sophomore Middle Blocker Karina Erreguin was also selected for both the All Region and All Tournament teams. Erreguin finished in the national top 25 for both solo and total blocks. Throughout her final season at Otero, she earned 375 kills, averaging 2.72 kills per set. Defensively she earned 39 solo blocks and 89 block assists. Erreguin also proved her chops in the back row, keeping the ball alive numerous times with 127 digs.
Freshman Outside Hitter Beatriz Souza was selected as an All Region player. Souza was first in the nation in total hitting attempts, and registered 475 kills. She averaged a .220 hitting percentage. She was a huge defensive threat as well, earning 557 digs and 58 total blocks.
Freshman Middle Blocker Melissa Rodriguez was nominated for All Tournament. She had a strong showing in the five matches Otero played in. Rodriguez hit a 0.239 and had 22 total blocks in 3 days. Throughout the season, she registered 97 blocks and 224 kills on the season.
Congratulations to these ladies for all their hard work. Go Rattlers!
