Otero Dance Studio to Celebrate 40 Years with Recitals on Dec. 17 and 18

Otero Dance Studio, formerly known as the OJC Dance Studio, will celebrate 40 years of dance on Dec. 17 and 18 in the Ed Stafford Theatre.

The founder, Darlene Blackford, started the program back in 1981 when she saw a need for dance in the community. With amazing support from Otero Junior College, now Otero College, and the community, the dance program grew and offered more and more classes through the years to become more than just an after school dance program.

In 1994, OJC Dance and Darlene, in partnership with Ed Stafford, staged the first production of The Nutcracker in the Arkansas Valley with dancers, community members and members of the Otero Players taking part. They have gone on to produce the holiday classic five times in Otero Dance’s history, so far! In the early 1990's Darlene began to give her students the opportunity to take charge of their show by starting the OJC Student Choreographers Showcase performances. Dancers were in charge of picking music, costumes, lighting, and creating their own choreography for dances in a showcase that was completely student produced. We continue this opportunity today as often as possible!

As Jennifer Jackson, Otero Dance Studio Director, and her instructors started planning their 40th Anniversary celebration, they decided to choose music from recitals from the past 40 years. With more than 53 productions, recitals, and showcases in history there were a lot of songs to choose from! With selections in the show from past recitals, recreated by current instructors with a fresh look, they hope everyone enjoys the show and maybe remembers a little bit about their dancing years. Music in the theater prior to the show starting and during intermission will also be music from old recitals. Be sure to come early to see if one of your old dance songs is featured!

The celebration begins at 7 p.m. on Dec. 17 and 18 at the Ed Stafford Theatre in the Otero College Humanities Center. Doors open at 6:15 with general admission just $5 at the door.
