The Foundation for Colorado Community Colleges Awards Five Otero College Students as Amazon Scholars

Five Otero College learners were named as Amazon Scholars last week. Tamera Houston of Colorado Springs, Karen Hayes of Aurora, Lawrence Pantoya of Pueblo, Shannon Stanko of Pueblo West, and Winda Hood of Colorado Springs were awarded $1,000 scholarships. The Foundation for Colorado Community Colleges announced a total of 67 recipients under the “Shot at a Scholarship” program. The scholarship program, funded by Amazon, is providing two full-tuition scholarships of $5,000 and five $1,000 scholarships at each of the Colorado Community College System’s 13 colleges. The 67 names were drawn from a pool of over 10,000 students who had attested to being fully vaccinated, enrolled in fall semester classes and registered in the drawing.

Lawrence Pantoya, who is putting the scholarship toward his nursing education at Otero College, said that he and his fellow students are eager to graduate and join the workforce to do their part in combating COVID-19. The Shot at a Scholarship program is one of many incentives being offered in the state to increase vaccination rates.

According to Angela Moore, Otero’s associate vice president of enrollment management and marketing, “The safety of Otero’s students has always been our top priority. We are excited to be practicing in-person learning this school year, and grateful that Amazon chose to invest in our student’s health so we can remain on campus by getting closer each day to our vaccination goals.”
