Girls in the Middle Registration Now Open

The 22nd annual Girls in the Middle Conference will be held on Saturday, March 7, at Otero Junior College from 9 a.m. until 2:30 p.m. The theme of this year’s conference is "Breaking New Ground" and it will encourage middle school aged girls to expand and break through to the amazing world of science, technology, math and the arts. The theme will be carried out throughout the day in workshops led by women in those fields. Registration is currently open for girls in grades 5 through 8, and adults who accompany them, until Feb. 19 at 5 p.m. All registrations are being taken online at

The goal of the conference is to encourage girls in grades 5 through 8 to continue studying math, science and technology once they enter high school. Last year 150 girls from 11 area schools, as well as homeschooled students in southeastern Colorado, attended the conference to learn more about careers that require an educational background in math, science, or technology.

This year's conference is expected to host at least 18 different career workshops that will be taught by women who are working in those professions. A few of the careers confirmed for this year's conference include emergency medical technician, engineering, graphic design, law enforcement, veterinary science, flight nurse and athletic trainer. The keynote address will begin at 9 a.m. with a continental breakfast. Following the address, the girls will attend two workshops in the morning, enjoy a lunch filled with activities, and then participate in afternoon sessions provided by the U.S. Air Force Academy. Assisting with activities will be team leaders made up of young women who are students in various organizations at OJC and cadets from U.S. Air Force Academy.

The Girls in the Middle committee is comprised of an all-volunteer group of professional women from the surrounding communities and Otero Junior College. The $5 fee for students includes breakfast, lunch and a t-shirt. Adults may also register for the conference for $5, and includes breakfast and lunch.
