Chris Carrillo Named New Athletic Director at OJC

Chris Carrillo, in his ninth season as the Rattlers Head Baseball Coach, has been selected at Otero Junior College’s new Athletic Director replacing Gary Addington, who was named the college’s Dean of Students earlier this fall.

A 2000 Pueblo Central graduate, Carrillo is an OJC alumnus who played on the 2001 Region IX Championship Team. He was an NJCAA All-American infielder.

After graduating from OJC in 2002, Carrillo went on to play at the University of Nebraska at Omaha. Carrillo completed his bachelor’s degree in sociology at Adams State College in 2006 and his master’s degree in physical education in 2010. Carrillo was Otero’s assistant coach for four years prior to being named head coach and has been at Otero for a total of 13 years as a coach.

During his tenure as the head coach at Otero, Carrillo placed 61 players to four-year institutions including five to Division I schools and one player went on to play for the Toronto Blue Jays in 2015. He has coached two Athletic All-Americans, 41 Athletic All-Region Players and eight Academic All-American student-athletes.

When asked about his new position, Carrillo said, “I am super humbled to be provided the opportunity to continue developing and implementing a vision for Otero Junior College Athletics. This opportunity is extremely exciting for me as well as my family. We love being a part of this great institution of Otero Junior College.”

Carrillo stated that his philosophy is that excellence is a result of hard work, dedication, sacrifice, and discipline. “I believe it’s important to create a positive, responsive, and challenging learning environment that cultivates academic, athletic and personal growth and excellence for students. I have been provided great mentorship from Coach Addington over the past 18 years as a player as well as a coach. I definitely have some big shoes to fill but with his continued support along with the support of our talented administration, I feel we can do great things for our institution,” said Carrillo.

Gary Addington, former Athletic Director at OJC, and now the college’s Dean of Students, said he is looking forward to working with Carrillo as he moves into his new role. “I’ve had the pleasure of working with Chris over my sixteen-year tenure as Athletic Director and actually coached him when he was a student athlete here at OJC. Over those years I watched Chris develop his leadership skills and create a culture within his teams that focused on academic, athletic and personal growth. I am confident that Chris will bring that same philosophy he exemplified as a coach to becoming an impactful leader of our athletic department and respected mentor to our coaching staff.”

In the interim, Drew Wold, the former assistant coach, will be serving as Head Baseball Coach for the Rattlers. Wold is a graduate and former student-athlete at Otero Junior College.
