OJC to offer Oceanography Course

Beginning this fall, Otero Junior College will be offering Oceanography as a four credit hour science course. The course will be taught by Dr. Allan Nolan who has been teaching at OJC since August 2018.

The Oceanography course, GEY 216, will cover a variety of topics including plate tectonics, marine rocks and sediments, environmental concerns, marine life, and more.

“I wanted to offer this class so that students at OJC could have another science outside of the standard courses offered,” Nolan said. “This might provide an opportunity for students to engage in the sciences in a way they did not originally think that they may.”

According to Nolan, the Lab potion of the class will be offered through a mixture of online WebQuests, research, and in-class hands-on labs that demonstrate and illustrate core concepts utilized in the lecture portion.

“Anyone who doesn’t see themselves as a physicist, chemist, or biologist might find this course of healing,” Nolan explained. “In this course will take a dynamic look of not only the ocean, but of the rivers and lakes, as well as how the atmosphere and weather all interact with each other.”
