Holly Carter Named New Century Workforce Pathway Scholar

Holly Carter from Golden, Colo. has been named a 2019 New Century Workforce Pathway Scholar and will receive a $1,250 scholarship awarded by the Coca-Cola Foundation and Phi Theta Kappa.

New Century Workforce Pathway Scholars are selected based on their academic accomplishments, leadership, activities, and how they extend their intellectual talents beyond the classroom. Over 2,000 students were nominated from more than 1,200 college campuses across the country. Only one New Century Workforce Pathway Scholar was selected from each state.

“I am extremely grateful to the nursing director at OJC, Amanda Clerkin, for nominating me for the All-USA Academic Team,” Carter said. “When I first found out I won for the state of Colorado I was in shock. I am so honored to represent Otero Junior College and the state of Colorado. Winning this award has proved that my hard work and dedication in the nursing program is paying off, and will continue to do so in my career. I have worked extremely hard to maintain a 4.0 throughout nursing school and this award has highlighted my effort.”

Carter further explained how the scholarship will help her reach her eventual goals of obtaining a bachelor’s degree in nursing, and eventually becoming a certified registered nurse anesthetist. Carter currently serves as president of the Student Nursing Association at OJC, and enjoys connecting with her peers through this club.

“This is quite an accomplishment for Holly. Kudos to all who supported Ms. Carter,” said Dr. Timothy Alvarez, OJC president. “She is an impressive student and she makes us look good.”
