Otero Players to Host Auditions for Everyman

The Otero Players will be hosting open auditions for their spring production of Everyman. Auditions will take place in OJC’s Ed Stafford Theatre on Feb. 7 and Feb. 8 from 6:00 pm. to 8:00 p.m. Those auditioning are asked to be prepared with a short monologue of their choice. Cassidy Litle, director of the production, explained that it would be best if the monologue was two to four minutes long.

The play Everyman, is a medieval drama by an unknown author from 1485. “While the author is unknown, this medieval morality play has a long history of related parables: a man is summoned by death and must take account of his life, but realizes the worldly possessions are of little value compared to the good deeds and pure spirit he has been neglecting.” Litle said.

According to Litle the parable is imposed upon the medieval preoccupation with life, death, seasonal hardships, and the bubonic plague. The Christian views of the time, proscribe how Everyman can find salvation.

Litle asked his theatre students three questions. Why are you looking forward to producing Everyman? What do you find interesting about the play? What do you think the audience can take away from the play?

"What's interesting is that it is a morality play which isn't a very popular style of play to put on, so I think it's pretty cool that we're putting on one." Hannah Holt, in response to question two, said.

"I am looking forward to producing Everyman because it's a medieval play and is very historical." Kenny Hare, in response to question one, said.

"It's interesting because actors and performers will have to dive in to portraying characters like 'knowledge' and 'good deeds' - not your typical characters." Cody Rogers, in response to question two, said.

"Initially, entertainment, but ultimately I hope people come away with a new perspective to their lives and some positive lessons to apply." Joseph Eubank, in response to question three, said.
