CU Denver and OJC to Host Rising Rural Educators Banquet

On Dec. 5, 2018, the University of Colorado Denver in collaboration with Otero Junior College will host the Rising Rural Educators Banquet. The purpose of this event is to seek out and engage with rural high school students who have the potential and desire to become educators.

Students are nominated to attend the banquet by high school counselors, teachers and/or principals on the basis of academic promise, leadership skills, and the characteristics necessary to be an outstanding educator. “We hope the honorees will consider the impact they can have as teachers in rural communities.” Ellen Schreivogel, residency coordinator, said.

Students in attendance will be able learn more about the career of teaching, discover ways to continue their education past high school, and connect with and gain support of other educators in the community. Members of the community, current educators and administrators were invited to celebrate with the youth.

Following the event, students will have opportunities to interact with existing Teacher Preparation Students in the OJC/CU Denver Learning Community, have a point person from the partnership to navigate the college process and have continual support from faculty and administrators to pursue their goal in higher education and of becoming educators.

“Recognizing and celebrating these youth, in the presence of their families and educators who nominated them, provides an opportunity to elevate the teaching profession to the status that it should be in our communities. “Schreivogel said.
