OJC Ag Olympics Once Again a Success

Otero Junior College’s seventh annual Ag Olympics was held on Wednesday Oct. 17, 2018. The event was once again sponsored by the OJC ag club and rodeo team. According to Brooke Matthew, ag faculty and organizer of the event, the Ag Olympics were once again a success. The winners of the gold boot, silver boot, and bronze boot were baseball, no sympathy staff, and men’s soccer – grey team, respectfully. The most enthusiastic award was given to men’s soccer, grey, blue, and white. Alaina Sayler and Fritz Doobles, both students at OJC, won the “guess the onion weight” competition.

Matthew thanked OJC for the support of the Ag Olympics. “It means a lot to the students and myself to see so many of you come out to watch, laugh and cheer.” She explained that she could not do this event without help from Linsay Sumpter, head rodeo coach, the ag students, and rodeo students.

Matthew thanked several people for their involvement with the Ag Olympics and helping to make it happen. James Lopez, Warren McClure, Lisa Gallegos, Ryan Belew, and Kim Juul, helped judge. Casey Weaver, Janet Golden, Kurt Paugh assisted with gathering supplies. Robert Samaniego announced at the event and Debbie Phillips took photos. Matthew also thanked all the advisors and coaches who helped put together teams.

Games at this year’s Ag Olympics included: hay stacking, pumpkin chunking, stick horse barrel racing, object in the straw, and wheelbarrow race. Side games included: chili’s, bucket bong, and roping dummy. “The campus body had the chance to get a taste of what agriculture is all about while having a good time.” Matthew said.

According to Matthew this event would not be success without the support of the local community, including Hirakata farms that once again donated pumpkins for pumpkin chunking. “The OJC Ag Club and Rodeo team work hard every year to put on this event and educate their fellow classmates as well.” Matthew stated.

The next event to be sponsored by the Agriculture Program and the OJC Foundation will be the Annual Ag Gala on New Year’s Eve, Monday, December 31, 2018. A dinner, dance, and auction will be held at OJC to raise funds for OJC Ag scholarships. Last year’s event raised more than $10,000.
