Welcome Back OJC Students

Classes are back in swing for the Fall Semester at Otero Junior College with the first week completed. According to Jeff Paolucci, vice president of Student Services, students are getting settled in well after the first week and are starting to make connections on campus and get involved in many of the extracurricular events that the colleges provides. “Students are encouraged to get involved on campus.” Paolucci said. “We offer a variety of activities, events, and clubs to get involved in.”

Many of OJC’s new and returning students walked in the Arkansas Valley Fair parade this past week, attended Jump Start, a new student orientation, and enjoyed a welcome barbeque on Aug. 19 with friends and family. Students also had the opportunity to participate in in a variety of activities last week that included battle ball, zorb racing, reality check, and a barbeque hosted by TRiO. There will be serval more activities throughout the semester for students to participate in. This week on Monday Aug. 27 students will have the opportunity to get free nachos starting at 9:30 p.m. until 11:30 p.m. in the Rizzuto Banquet Room provided by the Methodist church in La Junta.

This is OJC’s 77th year in operation and this spring OJC will graduate its 77th class. OJC has a variety of tools and programs to ensure each student is successful in what they choose to do. A great place to learn more about some of resources offered at OJC is to check with Educational Resource Specialist Hailey Wold. Her office is located in the Learning Commons in Wheeler Hall. There are also a variety of clubs offered on campus. To become involved or for a complete listing of clubs and organizations contact the Associated Student Government sponsor Dr. Jeffery Reed at 719-384-6957 or by email at

OJC is welcoming its fifth president in the history of the college. Dr. Timothy Alvarez started at OJC in mid-July and expresses his gratitude for the opportunity he has to serve this campus and community. He encourages students to stop by his office anytime and looks forward to seeing them around campus this year.
