Otero Junior College’s non-traditional practical nurses (PN) class of 2018 pinning ceremony was held on July 13, 2018, in OJC’s Ed Stafford Theater. Jenessa Kincaid, PN graduate, welcomed the graduates and their guests. Following the welcome, the presentation of the roses was made by the graduates. Diane McElroy, OJC nursing director, then gave the history of the pinning. The keynote speaker for the evening was Helen Haley, OJC nursing faculty, who addressed the audience. Jackye Johnson, nursing faculty, thanked everyone for coming and the graduates for all the work they had done. McElroy and Haley then completed the pinning of the graduates. The lighting of the lamps was done by Johnson. McElroy lead the graduates in the Nightingale Pledge and made the final presentation of graduates to the audience.

Graduates of the non-traditional PN class of 2018 include: Maricella Davis, La Junta; Aubrey Florez, Pueblo; Gertrude Kabuuza, Aurora; Jenessa Kincaid, Holly; Michelle Mobley, Swink; Jessie Quillen; Pueblo; Kim Ramsey, La Junta, and Keri Warn, Rocky Ford.

The Associate of Applied Science Degree in Nursing (RN), is designed with a Practical Nursing exit option. By taking an additional course at the end of the first year of the program, students will have completed the requirements for a Practical Nursing Certificate. Graduates who earn a Practical Nursing Certificate are eligible to apply to take the state licensing exam to become a Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN).

OJC offers Practical Nursing students the option of attending classes in a traditional class format that will take at least two semesters to complete after pre-requisite courses are finished. Or, students can choose to attend the non-traditional format (N.E.W.) with classes being held in the evenings and on the weekends. The N.E.W. program runs year round and is completed in approximately four semesters after prerequisite courses are finished.

Individuals interested in one of the nursing options OJC offers should contact the OJC nursing office at 719-384-6898.
