OJC Holds 34th BUENO-HEP Graduation

The end of the 34th year of the BUENO-HEP High School Equivalency program was celebrated with a graduation ceremony on June 22, 2018 in OJC’s Ed Stafford Theatre. Of 22 graduates from July 1, 2017 to June 22, 2018, 11 were able to attend the ceremony.

“We were so glad that so many of the student’s family and friends were able to attend the ceremony and celebrate the completion of a chapter in these student’s life’s. I am so proud of their accomplishment and desire to better themselves and their families.” Marian Morris BUENO-HEP coordinator said.

Morris explained what the graduates will do following completion of the BUENO-HEP Program. “Some graduates now have jobs or are now able to get better jobs. Others are planning to attend college to become a certified nursing assistant, a radiologist, a counselor, a barber, a welder, a policeman, and an electrician. One will be joining the National Guard, another is planning to join the Navy, and another the Coast Guard.”

According to Morris, anyone who is interested in completing the High School Equivalency (HSE) program should register and complete the pretests.

“The pretests are aligned with the official tests. They indicate who is ready to take the official tests, who needs a bit of review to be ready for the official tests, and who needs classroom instruction,” explained Morris.

“The pretests also indicate specific areas that need work for each tester. Pretests are half the length of the official tests,” said Morris. She explained that reading and language arts is a 90-minute test, math reasoning is a 60-minute test, science is a 47-minute test and social studies is a 33-minute test. Morris reflected on her experiences, stating that students should take only one test a day and certainly no more than two in a day to achieve the most success.

“Tutoring will be available through part of the summer, which may help some people get a bit of a head-start if the pretest results indicate that they need classroom work.” Morris said. Classes for the fall semester will begin Aug. 20, 2018, at 9:00 a.m. The Bueno HEP HSE office is located on the Otero Junior College campus in the Humanities Center, lower floor. Office hours of 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.

To complete the HSE tests, a person must be at least 17 and no longer enrolled in high school. There is no charge for the instruction, tutoring, or for the materials. For more information about the HSE program, call (719)384-6848 or email marian.morris@ojc.edu.
