Otero Junior College to Host Career Exploration Camps

Otero Junior College is set to host Career Exploration Camps this summer. The summer camps will take place twice a day from 9 a.m. – 12 p.m. and from 1 p.m. – 4 p.m. on July 16-19 and July 23-26. The Career Exploration camps will be offered to incoming 6 – 12 grade students. The goal of the Career Exploration Camps is to introduce area youth to a variety of career paths before they enroll in concurrent courses or attend classes at OJC Hailey Wold, OJC summer camp director, explained. To register for the camp visit https://www.ojc.edu/about/newsevents/ojcevents/stemcamps/summerstem03.aspx.

During each 3-hour camp session, students will be exposed to a career of interest and participate in an activity related to that career. For the first hour of each camp, a career expert will share the following information with the campers: name, job title and job location, education/experience required for position, why they chose this career, what a typical day of work consists of, hours worked, best and worst things about the job, salary, and advice for students.

At the end of the Career Expert’s presentation, students will have an opportunity to ask the expert any questions they have that were not answered during the presentation. Students will then participate in a hands-on activity related to that career.

Career experts in the following fields to be offered at the Career Exploration Camp include:

Jim Bullock, District Attorney;
Anne Taylor Boswell, News Reporter;
Trooper Jackson, State Patrol;
Toni Madrid, Financial Advisor at Edward Jones;
Christina Mackey, Certified Nursing Assistant;
Dr. Vance Cole DC, Chiropractor at la Junta Chiropractic Center;
Trevor Jute, PHARMD, Pharmacist;
Dr. Ryan Anderson, DDS, Dentist at Ryan T Anderson DDS;
Ashley Morlan, Elementary Teacher;
Wendi Lucero, Nail Technician;
Care Connect, Flight Medics;
Steve Keefer, Wildlife Officer;
Rebecca Paeth, Nurse;
Gary Addington, Athletic Director;
Mike Brewer, Crime Scene Investigator;
Mike Brewer, Polygraph Examiner;

Should an unseen obligation come up and a career expert is no longer to attend, their spot will be filled with another career.

“The success of our educational programs, outreach, and summer camps largely depends on the partnerships we have with our alumni and community members,” explained Wold. The volunteer career experts will be honored at a luncheon celebration on Friday, July 27 at 12:30 p.m.
