Anastasia Zykova Attends the Harvard Model of the United Nations Conference

On Feb. 15, 2018 – Feb. 18, 2018, Otero Junior College International student, Anastasia Zykova attended the Harvard Model of the United Nations (M.U.N) conference in Cambridge, MA. The M.U.N is a chance for students to express their ideas and see what the U.N. discusses at their meetings. Similar conferences are held at different Universities across the nation and students from all over the world attend. At the conference, student participants were separated into different committees and delegations. They were then given several problems that the U.N. could face today. Zykova represented Kenya in the International Atomic Energy committee.

“We all had a few days to try and solve the problem we were given to the best of our ability. The responses my peers gave frankly amazed me. They were able to formulate such knowledgeable quick responses and then speak on these complex problems we were given.” Zykova said.

Zykova explained that she was able to meet with different students from all over the world. There were students from Africa, Asia and Europe in attendance. “Every student I encountered and worked with was open-minded and offered wonderful ideas. I was truly impressed.” Zykova stated.

Students were given the opportunity to analyze historic events that have occurred around the world. The Disarmament and International Security Committee, Economic and Financial Committee, Social Committee, Humanitarian and Cultural Committee, and the World Health Organization are a few of the different committees that the students were separated into. “In these committees, we would examine the past strategies and figure out how to avoid making the same mistakes. The purpose of being separated into different organizations was to think about serious problems we face in the modern world,” Zykova said.

According to Zykova this was her first Model U.N. conference and if given another opportunity she would attend another one.
