OJC Announces Employees of the Year

Otero Junior College is proud to announce the faculty and staff members who have been named Employees of the Year. Four categories of employees are recognized each year at OJC for their outstanding service and dedication to the college. Those categories are: faculty, adjunct instructor, classified, and administrator/pro-tech.

This year’s honorees include: Lisa Gallegos, Faculty of the Year; Becky Horton, Classified Employee of the Year; Kelsey Barbee, Administrator/Pro-Tech of the Year; and Terry Hogue, Adjunct Faculty of the Year.

Faculty of the Year:

Lisa Gallegos has been chosen as Faculty of the Year. Gallegos joined Otero Junior College in 2002 and is currently Biology Faculty.

She obtained an AS degree from OJC, transferred to Metro State College, and finished her undergraduate degree at Adams State earning a BA in Biology. Gallegos received a Master’s degree from Lesley University.

Gallegos has incorporated innovative teaching techniques and strategies, along with serving on the Faculty Senate for three years. She is also the recorder for the State Faculty Advisory Council.

Students describe Gallegos as being very passionate about teaching and encourages them to reach their professional goals.

Adjunct Instructor of the Year:

Terry Hogue has been chosen as the Adjunct Faculty of the Year for 2017-18. Hogue joined Otero Junior College in 2013 teaching the Nurse Aide program that is offered three times a year.

Retired from the Veteran’s Administration, Hogue has more than 30 years of experience in the nursing field. Hogue provides high-quality instruction to students in this program. She is extremely organized, does things in a timely fashion and is a strong advocate for the Nurse Aide program. Hogue takes pride in her students and makes sure they perform to the best of their ability.

Classified Employee of the Year:

Rebecca Horton has been chosen as the 2017-18 Classified Employee of the Year. Horton started at OJC as a work study student, received her associates degree in 2007 and then became a full-time employee. She is currently an Accounting Technician II for Human Resource and Payroll.

Horton is best known for her attention to detail and accuracy. She is efficient, helpful and frequently works ahead. She knows her job very well and has a high level of commitment to the campus by looking for ways to help others and make their jobs easier. Because of the time Becky has worked at OJC, she has great institutional knowledge and understands the “big picture” of why and when processes, policies and timelines are in place.

Administrator/Pro-Tech of the Year:

Kelsey Barbee has been chosen as the Professional/Technical Employee of the Year for 2017-18. Barbee was an outstanding student athlete while attending OJC and received her Bachelor’s and MBA from Adams State College. She was hired in July 2012.

Barbee is a great asset to OJC’s Financial Aid Office. She ensures the office is in compliance with financial aid policies and procedures. Barbee spends her days processing and packaging student awards, counseling students and parents on loan borrowing. She monitors the financial aid verification process and answers numerous questions daily regarding students accounts. Her biggest accomplishment to date is decreasing and maintaining the college’s cohort default rate and improving the office efficiency.

In addition to being honored at OJC during the All Staff Meeting, each of the honorees will be recognized at a special awards ceremony later in the spring, hosted by the Colorado Community College System in Denver.
