Give Where You Live! – Support the OJC Foundation Programs on Colorado Gives Day

The Otero Junior College Foundation invites Coloradans like you to Give Where You Live! Help support scholarships for students and access to education here in our communities by donating on Colorado Gives Day, Tuesday December 5, 2017.

Community First Foundation and FirstBank each contributed $500,000 to create a $1 Million Incentive Fund, one of the largest giving-day funds in the country. Every non-profit receiving a donation on Colorado Gives Day will get a portion of the fund, which increases the value of every dollar donated. For example, if the OJC Foundation receives five percent of the total donations made on Colorado Gives Day, the OJC Foundation also receives five percent of the $1 Million Incentive Fund. In short, the more that is donated to the OJC Foundation, the more money it will receive from the Incentive Fund.

The OJC Foundation supports scholarships and programs in a variety of areas:

President’s Leadership Program: The mission of the program is to develop and train emerging leaders at Otero Junior College through a one- or two-year academic leadership program that is focused on academics, service and experiential learning. The Otero Junior College Foundation provides up to 20 annual scholarships in the amount of $1,000 to each selected scholar ($500 for Fall Semester and $500 for Spring Semester). This scholarship will be renewed for one more years if the scholar maintains a 3.2 college GPA and remains in good standing with the program and meets the year-two continuation eligibility requirements.

Ag Premier Scholarship: The Otero Junior College Foundation has developed a premiere agriculture scholarship available to freshmen and sophomore students. Scholarships are awarded to students at up to $2,000 per student for the academic year (a maximum of $1,000 per semester).

Kay Mahoney Memorial/Kaiser Permanente Scholarship: Funding for this scholarship program has been received through donations made in the memory of former OJC Nursing Instructor Kay Mahoney and through a generous donation from the Kaiser Permanente Foundation. Scholarship recipients will be awarded up to $1,500 per year ($750 for the fall semester and $750 for the spring semester).

Colorado Opportunity Scholarship Initiative: This is a new scholarship fund started last year. The Colorado Department of Education provides matching funds to help full-time, Colorado students who are U.S. citizens complete a certificate or degree program. There is an income requirement and minority/first generation students have priority. Students receiving this scholarship MUST participate in a rigor-based support program, which on our campus has been designated as TRiO Student Support Services. The funds must be matched by new or lapsed donors and matching funds must be used for students who fit the criteria for this scholarship.

Partnership for Excellence: The Partnership for Excellence is a new program developed to assist OJC in meeting staff/faculty and community education and enrichment strategic goals as funding through other sources becomes more limited. One portion of this fund will go toward supporting staff/faculty professional development for which there are no other funds available. The other portion will be used to create an annual speaker series to bring cultural and educational opportunities to the community as a whole. Grants from foundations as well as monies from individual donors will help to develop this fund. An initial level of $5,000-10,000 for each fund will need to be met before program funds are expended.

Franzman Family International Scholarship: This scholarship is offered by Seth and Barbara Franzman for the benefit of a deserving second-year (sophomore) international student to assist with funds necessary to continue their education at Otero Junior College, and to promote a positive international culture in the College community.

Nonprofit’s Discretion: This designation allows the Foundation to use donated funds toward programs and initiatives with the greatest need.

How: Go to Just head to the OJC Foundation profile at and schedule your donation between now and Dec. 5.
