SCOTTSBLUFF, NEB. — The first day of the Region IX South volleyball tournament is in the books and the Otero Junior College and McCook Community College teams captured first-round wins Thursday at Cougar Palace.

Otero, the No. 3 seed, opened the tournament by sweeping past Trinidad State Junior College 25-21, 25-22, 25-23 in three hard-fought sets.

McCook, the No. 4 seed, received double-figure kills from Megan Orth and Ryan Maddera to top Lamar Community College in four, 25-20, 25-16, 23-25, 25-13.

Otero and McCook advance to play the No. 1 and 2 seeds Friday morning. Otero will tangle with No. 2 Western Nebraska Community College at 9 a.m., while McCook will battle No. 1 Northeastern Junior College at 11 a.m.

Trinidad and Lamar drop down to the loser's bracket. Lamar will face the Otero/WNCC loser at 1 p.m. while Trinidad will battle the McCook/NJC loser at 3 p.m.

Both contests Thursday evening were close. Trinidad gave Otero everything it had. Otero busted out to a 5-0 first set lead behind the serving of Lauren Addington. After that, the Trojans came back before falling 25-21.

The second set was just as nip and tuck with Otero winning 25-22. The third set was even closer as Otero came back in the third to win 25-23.

The McCook and Lamar match was just as interesting. McCook won the first set 25-20 and then opened up a close contest in the second set to roll to the 25-16 win. The third set saw Lamar come back fighting as they led early and then led 24-21 at one point only to hold off McCook 25-23.

The Indians rebounded in the fourth, jumping out to an 8-0 lead and cruising to the 25-13 win.

Orth led McCook with 16 kills while Maddera finished with 14 kills.

There will be six matches on Friday beginning at 9 a.m. with the final match starting at 7 p.m. The tournament continues Saturday with the championship slated for 1 p.m.
