OJC inducts 30 students into PTK Honor Society
On Sunday, December 4, Otero Junior College’s chapter of Phi Theta Kappa inducted thirty new members into the honor society in the Student Center Banquet Hall. The ceremony was led by officer team of President, Corbin Sanchez; Vice-President of Fellowship/Membership, Christina Mackey; Vice-President of Service, Anna Mathews; Vice-President of Honors, Samantha Mahoney; Historian, Emma Brown and Secretary Malena Berchot.
Recognized were the efforts of the members on the college mini-projects; which included, faculty spotlights, cleaning up around the dorms, and volunteering at the Grand Theater in Rocky Ford. Also recognized was the Malena Martinez fundraising effort of membership with the help of Otero faculty and staff. Cake and Punch were served after the ceremony.
Membership also recognized member Justin Koenig and his family, for hosting a Phi Theta Kappa induction party where members had dinner, danced and played games. The event was held at the home of Justin’s father and was an amazing time for fellowship amongst members before finals began.
Members that were inducted at the ceremony were; Chance Abert, Julianna E. Alvarado-Ibarra, Bailey A. Ashida, Emma Brown, Heather Estrada, Tony Harviston, Shaelyn J. Haberman, Chelsie Hurren, Joshua Knabenshue, Justin W. Koenig, Christina Mackey, Dillon R. Martin, David O. Olatunji, Whitni R. Oquist, Carmelo M. Papa, Kathryn Peterson, Stephanie L. Plata, Cedric Quintana, Nicholas A. Ramirez, Todd A. Redner, Mary K. Rice, Marisela I. Rodriguez, Corbin D. Sanchez, Mary Sand, Jaymie E. Thomas, Bethann M. Traver, Kayla L. Valdez, Jaycee L. Vanegmond, Abbey M. Wehrman, and Marcus M. Wolfram.
Phi Theta Kappa is the international honor society for two-year college students. Since its founding in 1918, Phi Theta Kappa has recognized the academic achievements of students in associate degree programs. The society has more than 1,280 chapters located in all 50 of the United States, Canada, Germany, the Republic of Palau, the Republic of the Marshall Islands, the Federated States of Micronesia, the British Virgin Islands, United Arab Emirates, and U.S. territories.
Approximately 135,000 of the most outstanding two-year college students are inducted into membership in Phi Theta Kappa each year. Phi Theta Kappa offers students opportunities for engaging in scholarly activities, earning academic scholarships, providing service to the community, developing and practicing leadership skills, and enjoying fellowship with other scholars.
