OJC STEM Camps - registration still available

Registrations for the Otero Junior College’s annual STEM Camps are pouring in, but there are still available slots for most ages. OJC STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) offers hands-on learning opportunities for area students throughout July.  Workshops fill quickly, so early registration is encouraged.

STEM Scouts Camps (for students going into 7th -12th grades):
•    Minecraft Madness: 7/18 and 7/19 from 8 to 11:45 a.m. Wanted: Virtual Builders.  Welcome to the Minecraft Universe where your skills and sense of survival are key in creating your realm in three dimensions. If you think you have what it takes to defend your home from hostile mobs of Creepers, this is the workshop for you! $25.
•    Computer Coding: 7/18 and 7/19 from 8 to 9:45 a.m. Do you love computers?  Do you want to code using Scratch?  This is the camp for you.  Take your programming skills to the next level with us.  No previous programming/coding experience necessary.  $14.
•    Biological Lab Book: Illustrations from the Microscope: 7/18 and 7/19 from 10 to 11:45 a.m. Are you another Leonardo da Vinci? He could do it all – science and art.  Join a former research scientist and a professional artist to learn how to weave the two worlds of science and art in your very own lab book. $14.
•    Lay Down a Bead: 7/20 from 8 to 11:45 a.m. Do you know what soldering and 3D printing have in common? You!  Join us to learn how to solder, then apply that skill to 3D printing technologies.  You will be going home with your won soldering kit to continue to improve your skill at “laying down a bead.” $25.
•    Special FX: 7/20 and 7/21 from 8 to 11:45 a.m. Want to create a digital presentation that people won’t forget? Use green screen filming technology as well as Apple software to create a variety of effects to make your presentations exceptional. $25.
•    Flight: Wings over the Rockies: 7/21 from 8 to 11:45 a.m. may the four forces of flight be with you - lift, drag, weight and thrust! Design and build different styles of aircraft and participate in challenges to test your prototypes. $14.

STEM Seeds Camps (for students going into K-2nd grades):
•    EW and GOO: 7/12 and 7/13 from 8 to 9:45 a.m. OR 12:30 to 1:45 p.m. Do you like to squish stuff? Are you ready to see what goo can do? Look no further than this workshop.  We will create and discover some hidden properties of sove very squishy substances. $14
•    My Super Body: 7/12 and 7/13 from 10-11:15 a.m. OR 2 – 3:15 p.m. Did you know that you are a super hero?  Your body can do amazing things.  Join us to learn about each of the body systems that work for you. $14.
•    Balloons on the Go: 7/14 from 8 - 9:15 a.m. OR 12:30 – 1:45 p.m. How many ways can you get a balloon to move?  Let’s find out together as we discover Newton’s Laws of Motion using balloons. $7.
•    Take a byte out of coding: 7/14 from 10 – 11:15 a.m. OR 2 – 3:15 p.m. Computer programmers wanted! Take your first step into the world of computer programming.  Learn how computers think and how to make them do what you want.

STEM Sprouts Camps (for students entering 3rd through 6th grades):
•    Fractals and Tessellations: 7/19 & 20 from 8 – 9:45 a.m. Did you know there are mathematical principals in art?  Join us as we explore the concepts of fractals and tessellations and create beautiful art projects.  $14.
•    Innovative Inventions: 7/19 & 20 from 10 – 11:45 a.m. Make something that does something.  Create inventions with littleBits, easy-to-use electronic building blocks. $14.

STEM Wildlife Adventure Camp (for students entering 3rd throught 8th grades):  July 25 – 27. This camp offers opportunities for young explorers to learn more about nature. Offered will be a variety of nature walks, live raptors from the Native and Raptor Center of Pueblo, a tour the fish hatchery in Las Animas. All promise to engage and entertain learners. The camp fee is $25.
